Horsebox Driver Training

Horsebox Driver Licence

The Category C1 Licence is required to drive a 3.5 to a 7.5 tonne horse box which this does not include a trailer attached. Usually this size of horsebox accommodates 1 or 2 horses and some equipment if required.

To gain your C1 LIcence, there are three steps as follows:

1. Driving Theory Test. This is the first step in obtaining an HGV Licence. (The Theory Test Results will then be valid for 2 years which can also be used for gaining further HGV licences). Having completed and passed the Theory, you will then move to the practical exam.

2. Your Driving Skills. We teach you how to drive in adverse weather conditions, ideal speed for when there are horses onboard, manouvering in a complex situation, reversing, parking, cornering and more. Absolute safety is a paramount necessity to you, the horses and other drivers on the road.

3. Practical Demonstration. This is where the examiner will ask you standard and basic questions which could be anything to do with the vehicle. Therefore, you have to know your vehicle you are driving and if there are any visible faults and ensuring that it is safe to drive and that the horses will be secure in the box with a securely closed door at the back and more.

We will guide you through the whole process including the administration required and answer any questions you may have. Following this, we will advise you on the best way forward.
